Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce & Community Association have expressed huge disappointment at the loss of jobs with the recent announcement of the closure of the Dept. of Environment, Community & Local Government offices in Tubbercurry. This was half expected locally as the 110 employees that were originally there some years ago have gradually dwindled and at present only 50 is working there.  The Chamber of Commerce had a meeting with Minister for small businesses John Perry back in October pleading to have offices retained but despite a number of requests for follow up meetings with the Minister did not materialise.  In short the silence was deafening.  The move of the offices to Tubbercurry back about 2004 was a huge boost to the local economy and a number of the workers purchased homes locally while many others rented accommodation.  Many natives of South Sligo got re-deployed back to Tubbercurry from civil service jobs around the country and its existence made a huge impact on the local economy.  With 110 jobs in the town, it was like a factory, as the staff spent money in town and patronised the local shops, restaurants, etc.  Local businesses had invested in equipment, training and personnel and the result now is that staff in some businesses will lose their jobs or go on short time.  100 jobs in Tubbercurry was as good as 500 in cities.  We realise Tubbercurry is a small cog in a big wheel but the local economy will be hit badly by the closures announced.  The two buildings occupied by the Dept. for the offices are owned by a local businessman and he now faces huge challenges to get them re-occupied.
Tubbercurry now also faces a huge challenge to attract new business into the town and this is a challenge we will have to face head on.  Over the decades many similar problems have arose but the town has continued to survive and thrive.  We have the Head Office of Connacht Gold and good manufacturing businesses and we intend seeking new employers and businesses.  One thing we have learned over the years is not to rely on help from any Government Agency.  The jobs that came to Tubbercurry were originally supposed to go to Knock but that did not materialise due to planning issues.  It is ironic that many of the jobs now leaving Tubbercurry will be going to Ballina and Castlebar.  Tubbercurry questions is that just the way the dice fell or has it anything to do with the fact Co. Mayo has 4 Fine Gael T.D.’S including An Taoiseach.

The Annual Spring Clean takes place this Sat. 25th February meeting 10 a.m. at The Square.  Organised by Tubbercurry Tidy Towns Committee this is a badly needed activity that can actually be good fun.  Each approach road needs a thorough clean up under bushes, behind ditches and walls and over fences.  If each road provided half a dozen collectors and if each estate did similarly, a great job could be done in a couple of hours.  Bags and gloves will be provided at the start 10.a.m  at Wolf Tone Square.  Children should be encouraged to come along as it will be an eye opening experience for them and make them realise how we thrash our own environment.  Everybody welcome to take part.

Congratulations to Martin McGarrigle Gallagher House who turned 40 on 15th Feb. and celebrated in style by playing bocce with his team mates Cara Special Olympics Tubbercurry. Notes Feb. 10th

Recent Deaths -The sudden death occurred on Feb. 6th of Peter Johnston, Lavagh, at his home.  Petie, as he was affectionately known was a lovely character who never offended anybody and was held dear in the hearts of many.  Son of John and the late Kathleen, Petie was due to celebrate his 50th birthday next June and he had already organised the party.  Petie always enjoyed the company of others and he was always interested in what happened in other peoples lives.  Despite having challenges with his health throughout his life he made little of whatever illness came his way and seemingly adopted a philosophy early in life that life was to be enjoyed, come what may.  With so much doom and gloom about in these recessionary times, we could all take a leaf out of Petie Book of life.  Since he was a teenager Petie worked for Bartley and Moyra Roddy on the farm and Petie soon became an expert on sheep and cattle.  This knowledge he shared freely with farmers as they chatted either at Achonry Creamery and store, at the mart or over a social drink.  Petie became synonymous with his tractor, which was his main mode of transport and he was a regular feature on the road coming and going around Achonry Creamery.
As news spread of his untimely death, many a kind word was spoken of his kind and gentle nature.  His remains reposed at his home at Lavagh and large numbers of friends called to pay their last respects.  His remains were removed to the Sacred Heart Church, Lavagh and burial took place in Court Abbey cemetery.  He is survived by his father Johnny, sister Mary, brothers Gerry, Kevin, Padraic, Brendan, Tom, Ollie, aunts uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends, all to whom sympathy is extended.  May his gentle soul rest in peace.

The death occurred on Feb. 1st last of Katie Henry (nee Marren) late of Rhue, Tubbercurry.  Aged 91, wife of the late Martin, Katie was an active lady all her life and was very proud of all her nine children, 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  Her renowned talent for knitting was known far and wide and along with a network of ladies throughout South Sligo many of Katie’s garments and produce such as Aran sweaters were sold into the American market.  Many old friends and clients of hers spoke of Katie’s ability to make garments from a description by the client without any pattern to refer to.  Like any Tourlestrane woman, Katie took an active interest in Gaelic Games and she always enjoyed when her sons were performing on the football fields.  Indeed she was very proud of all her family who were involved in various facets of society including religious, educational, manufacturing and social fields. In recent years Katie fell into poor health and after her death her remains reposed at the home of her daughter Marian and at the Coen funeral home.  Removal took place to Tourlestrane Church and burial took place in Rhue cemetery, just a short distance from where Katie lived for the last 65 years.  She is survived by her seven sons Gerry, Fr. Jimmy, Tommy, Brendan, Martin Oliver, Jackie, Paddy, daughters Marian and Breege, brothers Tommy & Luke, sister Elizabeth, grandchildren, great children, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.  May she rest in peace.

The death occurred on Feb. 1st of Sean Frizzell in Birmingham.  In his early 60’s Sean was born and reared in Goldfield, Chaffpool and after working locally for a number of years as a young man, he hit for England in the early 1970’s.  He spent much of the remainder of his life living around Birmingham and tried to get home every few years to visit his family.  His remains came home and reposed at the Coen funeral home, prior to removal to Moylough Church.  Burial took place in Rhue cemetery.  Sympathy is extended to his brother Willie (Goldfield) sister Elizabeth (Rhue) Mary (Ballyshannon) Philomena & Evelyn (London), nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.  May he rest in peace.

Cinema Re-Opens A little bit of Hollywood came to Tubbercurry last Thursday evening Feb. 2nd when the cinema re-opened in St. Brigids Hall after a gap of over 40 years.  It is thought the last film is be shown on the big screen in St. Brigids Hall was ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ in 1969. The cinema experience has been re- ignited by a new group known as ‘Clocktower Entertainment’ and an exciting line up of films has been organised over the next few months.  Getting the right evening to suit most people is a bit of trial and error so for the rest of February Thursday night is Tubbercurrys movie nights.  Guest of honour to re-launch the cinema was Emmy Award winner and Tubbercurry native, Dearbhla Walsh.  Dearbhla gave a highly entertaining and informative talk on the whole film experience and on some of her experiences in the film directing world.  The opening film shown was ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ and the lead player Andy Serkis sent his regards to Tubbercurry via Dearbhla.  Master of ceremonies Mary Barry spoke on some memories of the 1960’s cinema experience while film group chairman Sean Walsh spoke of his 1950’s memories. Names of Fr. Duffy, Bernie & Nan Maye, Peter Gibbons and Martin McCormack were just some of the people remembered as pioneers of the cinema in those years.  Cinema is a marvellous social occasion for people of all ages and families and should be experienced.  The line up of films over the next few weeks is very exciting and is advertising locally.  Well done to all concerned and best wishes for many more great cinema night.

Where is your dog? Dog owners are advised to keep their pets locked up and ensure they do not wander.  Many sheep owners throughout South Sligo have sheep which will be lambing over the next few weeks.  They are especially vulnerable at this time of year when heavily pregnant and dog owners should ensure their dogs do not stray away.  When stray dogs get together they form packs which can quickly turn vicious causing huge damage to sheep flocks.

The death occurred on January 20th last of Ann Keaveney (nee Morahan) late of No. 1 Mountain Road and originally Humbert St. Tubbercurry.  Aged 77, Ann fought illness bravely and always kept the cheerful side out.  Ann trained as a nurse in Romford, Essex like many young Irish nurses of her era and worked at various hosptals in England before returning to Dublin where she worked in various hospitals including Leopardstown.  On retiring from work she came back to her native Tubbercurry where she got fully involved in the local social scene.  Ann was a great drama enthusiast and was a season ticket holder for the Western Drama Festival.  Her great indulgence was travel throughout her life, and there are very few countries that she had not visited at least once.  She always kept details of her travels, and coins and notes from her latest holiday was always kept “in case she returned”.   The writer here met her in New York by pure chance 10 years ago.  She also liked the occasional cruise and she surely would have had something to say about the cruise ship that sank off the Italian coast lately. Many a captains table on these cruises would have been entertained by Ann, who was a marvellous conversationalist.  Ann was predeceased by her husband Pat, sister Breege and is survived by brothers Joe, Tommy, Bernard & Seamus, sisters Agnes & Marie. inlaws, nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. Her remains reposed at the Morahan Funeral home and funeral Mass took place in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Tubbercurry. Burial took place in Rhue cemetery.  May she rest in peace.

The death occurred on January 23rd last of Phil Tuohy (nee O’Hara) late of Kincullew, Aclare. Aged 82 years, Phil was an active woman all her life until poor health slowed her over the last couple years.  A past pupil of Castlerock Primary School and an Irish school in Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo.  Phil then went on to train as a primary school teacher in Carysfort Training College.  After teaching in Co. Wicklow and other schools she then came back to her native Aclare and was Principal of Kilmactigue Primary School for about 35 years up until her retirement.  Besides being a teacher, Phil was a great community activist, and was secretary of Aclare Development Council for about 15 years, being instrumental in starting up the now famous Aclare St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  The ceili in Kilmactigue Community Centre was also her baby.  Phil showed a great interest in her past pupils and when meeting them years after they left her she would always enquire as to their present work, education and family.  Many sad and joyous occasions at Kilmactigue Church were graced with music organised by Phil.  Her remains reposed at the Brennan Funeral home, Kilmactigue prior to removal to Kilmactigue Church and burial took place in Kilmactigue cemetery. Phil is survived by her husband Dan, son Justin, daughter Maria,  cousins and many friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

The death occurred on January 23rd last of Celia Tighe (ne Murray) late of Carrowlobaun, Aclare. In her 90th year, Celia had enjoyed good health until just before Christmas and had done her weekly shopping, without a list, until November. Mother of nine children, Celia worked hard all her life.  Born and reared in Tullinglug, she spent the last 66 years living Carrowlobaun.  Her late husband Tommy worked a lot in England and it was up to Celia to run the farm and rear the family.  She was an enterprising lady and was before her time in Agri-tourism.  Local curate and later parish priest, Fr. McLoughlin developed a small network of tourists coming into Aclare back in 1960’s and Celia organised accommodation for many Germans coming to visit the area.  They helped pay the bills and she made a lasting impression on all who met her.  Her remains reposed at Coens Funeral home, Tubbercurry and removal took place to Kilmactigue Church.  Burial took place in Kilmactigue cemetery.  Celia is survived by two sons Tommy at home and Peter (Kerry), seven daughters, Bernadette, Ann Henry (Aclare), Phil ( Ballisodare), Monica Wynne (Achonry), Angela Kerins (Ballina), Mary Brennan (Roadstown) and Carmel.  She enjoyed the company of 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.  Sympathy is extended to all and to her inlaws and relatives.  May she rest in peace.

The new pedestrian crossing at Teeling Street in now almost completed and already it is making an impact in helping people cross more safely.  A big well done is extended to local council engineer David Goulden on securing finance in these stringent times for the project. Well done also to local council supervisor Jerry Connolly and his efficient staff on doing the job with relatively minor inconvenience to businesses and street users. A number of car parking places have been lost on the street because of the crossing so it is now more important than ever that shop and office staff in the various businesses park in their own back yard or in other off street parking areas and leave the on street parking to shoppers.

NOTES Jan. 20th
The death occurred
on January 12th of Anne Gallagher (nee Killoran) late of Clooncagh, Tourlestrane and originally from Doocastle.  Aged just 59 years Ann had battled bravely with ill health for the last 2 years, but tried to be out and about as much as possible while able.  Married to Mickey, their family was her pride and joy, and she always enjoyed going to football or hurling matches when her family or Tourlestrane were involved.  Prior to starting a family Ann worked in her early years in Tubbercurry, firstly in Tommy & Ann Killorans bar/restaurant and then with Paddy & Teresa McCarrick in their grocery/butcher shop.  A great member of staff and manager, she got to know a wide circle of people throughout South Sligo through her work, and these people remained friends throughout life.  While rearing their family Ann worked with Mickey on the farm and with his cattle haulage business and every animal was delivered on time because of Ann’s military style efficiency. Her remains reposed at their family home in Clooncagh after her death and the thousands of people who called to their house and attended the funeral was testimony to the great regard people held for Ann.  Removal of her remains took place to Tourlestrane Church, and burial took place in Rhue cemetery.  Ann is survived by her husband Mickey, sons Adrian, Enda, Raymond daughters Fiona, Karen, Elaine & Deirdre, grandchildren, brother Sean, sisters Josephine & Maura, inlaws, nephews, nieces and many friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.
