On Friday 10th May at 7pm RTE Nationwide will feature the Western Drama Festival as it celebrated it's 70th Anniversary. As this is the oldest such festival in Ireland RTE took a particular interest in it. Cameraman Micheal O' Domhaill spent a whole day and part of a night in town during the recent festival. He filmed throughout the town, in Nathy Brennans pub and in St Brigids Hall. The programme will also feature footage from the All Ireland Finals in Athlone where RTE are the main sponsors. The RTE 1 Simply AmDram features six drama groups who are regular visitors to the Drama Festivals in Tubbercurry. They are; Ballyshannon, Brideview Co Waterford, Carrigallen, Bradan Leixlip, Nenagh Co Tipp. and Prosperous Co Kildare. The series of six episodes continues at 7pm on Tuesday evenings. Viewers should look out for the episodes featuring the Western Drama Festival when the Cornmill Players from Carrigallen in 'The Seafarer' will be the group in focus.
The adjudicator selected by the Western Drama Festival of One Act plays is Tony Rushforth to be held in St. Brigids Hall Theatre on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, November. Tony will be making his third visit to the festival having previously adjudicated the full length Western Drama Festival some years ago and more recently the All Ireland One Act Finals. This year he will adjudicate at the All Ireland Open Finals in Athlone which opens on 2nd. May. Three of the groups who participated at the recent festival qualified for the finals. Compantas Lir Claregalway in 'The Way You Look Tonight' and Glenamaddy Players in 'Moment' are in The Confined finals Rossmore West Cork, and Estuary Players in 'The Boys Next Door' have the distinction of opening the Finals in Athlone.
The next major event for the Western Drama Festival will be the annual One Act Festival from 21st to 23rd November 2013.
